During March of last year Giorgio Napolitano, the president of the Italian republic, inaugurated Turin's completely renovated Museum of the Risorgimento. This is a key place to find out about Italian National history.
Situated in the magnificent Carignano palace, a masterpiece by the architect Guarino Guarini, the Museum of the Risorgimento is probably the best place in Italy to learn about Italian unification, which celebrates its 150th anniversary (1861-2011) this year. The unification was in fact a long and complex historical process that involved the Napoleonic invasion, but with roots that extend a long time prior to this.
The museum has undergone vast restoration works to create the conditions for the exhibition of its 2579 pieces, that have themselves been selected from a memorial collection of 53,011 pieces. The Franco-Italian Richard Peduzzi, well known for his collaboration with Patrice Chéreau, has been responsible for the renovation design work.
The new layout presents the Italian unification within the broader context of European history, including the spread of the principle of the nation state from the time of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. You leave the visit with a much clearer understanding of this fascinating historical period that is often poorly understood. This renewal has proven to be extremely popular and the museum has attracted over 50,000 visitors during the first two months since its reopening.
