Asciano, only a few miles from Siena (separated from the latter by a line of hills), is a fortified town which has retained its medieval character. With its Romanesque church, remains of an Etruscan necropolis, paintings by a dynasty of local artists and the matchless harmony of ochres and browns amid a landscape of olive trees and vineyards, the town is quintessentially Tuscan in character.
