Although the town of Certaldo, near San Gimignano, may seem disappointing at first glance, it is worth continuing up to Certaldo Alto, either via the modern town or by cable-car. Built of pink brick and surrounded by walls, the delightful upper town has a charming, peaceful atmosphere, and seems little changed from the time when Boccaccio (1315-75), author of Decameron, lived here.
