Collodi
: Michelin's recommendations
As well as being the name of a small village near Lucca and Pistoia, Collodi is also the nom de plume adopted by the Italian writer Carlo Lorenzini (1826-90), who created the storybook character of Pinocchio, the string puppet carved by the old carpenter Gepetto. Although much of the town of Collodi now seems to be dedicated to the famous wooden puppet, it is also worth visiting the town for the delightful Villa Garzoni gardens.
