Sassetti Chapel - Church of Santa Trinita : Michelin's recommendations
In the chapels in the right aisle, note the miraculous crucifix of St John Gualbert, a Coronation of the Virgin by Neri di Bicci, frescoes and a Gothic reredos by Fra Angelico's master, Lorenzo Monaco, illustrating the Annunciation and the life of the Virgin Mary; on the opposite side is a wooden statue of Mary Magdalen, carved by Settignano andano, the tomb of G. Davanzati, a Roman sarcophagus, covered with a recumbent figure, the Mystical Marriage of St Catherine by Antonio del Ceraiolo. In the left transept is the tomb of Benozzo Federighi, made of marble inset with glazed terracotta, by Della Robia. The Sassetti Chapel is in the south transept: it was commissioned by the rich banker from Ghirlandaio and illustrates Scenes from the Life of St Francis (1485) set in Florence (the Piazza della Signoria, the Palazzo Vecchio, the Verna Convent and even Santa Trinita itself, its Romanesque architecture as it was at the time, can be identified). It depicts famous Florentine figures of the day (apart from the donors, it shows Lorenzo the Magnificent near the della Signoria loggia and Angelo Poliziano greeting Giulio and Lorenzo de Medici at the top of the staircase, etc.).
