Leghorn : Michelin's recommendations
This important commercial port specialises in the shipping of timber, marble, alabaster, cars and craftwork from Florence. Construction of the port was begun by Cosimo I of Medici in order to replace the port at Pisa, Porto Pisano, which had silted up, and work was finished under Cosimo II in 1620. The hub of city life centres on Via Grande, lined with arcaded buildings, and Piazza Micheli, which is adorned with a monument to Ferdinand I de Medici.
