Situated between Follonica and Siena, and perched at an altitude of 400m in the foothills of the Colline Metallifere, Massa Marittima has retained much of its medieval character. Its history is closely linked to the mining industry, which brought prosperity to the town. The adjective “marittima” which follows the town’s name is thought to refer either to the sea (suggesting that the town’s territory once extended as far as the sea) or to the “Maremma” region which lies south of the town.
