Pienza Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini was born in Pienza in 1405. At that time the town was known as Corsignano, but after Piccolomini, a humanist and art enthusiast, became Pope Pius II, he commissioned the Florentine Bernardo Rosselino, a pupil of Alberti, to transform his native town into an “ideal city” built according to Renaissance ideals. In recognition, the citizens of Corsignano changed the town’s name to Pienza, a name inspired by that of the pope.
