Piombino lies in the heart of ancient Etruria on a promontory which has been the site of three harbours since Antiquity: Baratti, built by the Etruscans; Marina, which operated from the 12C to the early 20C; and the old port of Falesia, now known as Portovecchio. This maritime tradition continues today as Piombino is now the most important passenger ferry port in Italy. The town has retained some fine historical buildings and boasts wonderful views of the Tuscan archipelago from Piazza Bovio.
