Leaning Tower Highly Recommended Highly Recommended Highly Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
This is the emblem and symbol of Pisa, and the masses crowd around it constantly, busloads invading the square in a polyglot meeting whose main ambition seems to be being photographed such that it appears that they are stopping the tower from falling with their hand. It is probable that if like any self-respecting tower this tower stood upright, it would find the public totally indifferent to it.VThat would be a great shame as this campanile which was begun in 1173 by Bonanno Pisano and finished by Giovanni di Simone, is superb! The tower is cylindrical in the fashion of Byzantine towers. It has six storeys of galleries, more Romanesque than Pisa style and a great elegance. But of course it leans and the galleries seem to unwind in a spiral around the building... Subsidence of the soil caused the phenomenon when the work had reached the first storey. Today its deviation from the vertical is 5m and it is increasing by 1 to 2mm per year. Its total collapse is forecast for the year 2040, unless the work to right it, which has begun and stopped many times, saves it.
