This refined square in the heart of medieval Pisa is today teeming with students from Palazzo Cavalieri. It was transformed by Cosimo I Medici who commissioned buildings from Vasari for the Knights of the Order of Santo Stefano. Founded in 1562, this religious and military order adhering to the Rule of St Benedict was entrusted with leading the fight against Muslim pirates who infested the Mediterranean.
