Poppi : Michelin's recommendations
The Arno valley lies below the proud town of Poppi, formerly the capital of the Casentino. Its streets are lined with arcades and dominated by the castle which once belonged to the Counts Guidi. In 1289, the terrible Battle of Campaldino took place at the foot of the town, in which Florence and other Guelph towns, helped by knights from the House of Anjou, fought against the Ghibelline troops of Arezzo. The latter were crushed, opening the way for complete Florentine hegemony in Tuscany.
