Roselle was an Etruscan town known as Russel, before it passed to the Romans in 294 BC and became known as Rusellae. The town fell into gradual decline following the fall of the Roman Empire and was abandoned in 1138 when it lost its status as a bishopric. All that now remain are the magnificent ruins which bear witness to the town's illustrious past.
