Francesco Ferruci commanded the militia of the Florentine Republic who vainly resisted the troops of Charles V on the 3 August 1530. Ferrucci was fatally wounded during the battle by a man named Maramaldo. The Ferrucci Museum recalls this battle that meant that the village of Gavinana went down in history and the equestrian statue of Ferrucci was erected on the main square.
