Torre del Lago is a pleasant holiday resort on the shore of Lake Massaciuccoli, which is populated by fish and turtles and where over 250 species of birds live permanently or migrate through. Smart villas nestle on the edge of a vast forest of native tree species overrun by umbrella pines. The town was named in honour of the musician Giacomo Puccini who lived here from 1891 in the villa where he is now buried.
