Nestled in a magnificent dark green fir forest, Vallombrosa owes its fame to the poets Milton and Lamartine who celebrated it in their work. In 1028 a young Florentine nobleman, Giovanni Gualberto, founded a community here based on the Benedictine model. Its monastery has preserved its 16C and 17C appearance.
