This lively Versilia seaside resort, famous for its carnival, developed when Maria Luisa of Spain started the fashion for sea bathing here in the early 19C. Rebuilt after a fire in 1917, Viareggio today consists of a seafront promenade lined with Liberty and Art Deco villas and a long beach of fine sand, as well as an active fishing harbour and two lovely pine forests.
