Surrounded by Etruscan and medieval city walls, the ancient town of Volterra sits on a rocky spur in the heart of an unusual landscape of spectacular chaotic landslides known as Le Balze. The town’s golden age was during the Etruscan period when it became one of the twelve Etruscan Lucumonies. Although its layout is medieval, this town famous for alabaster work retains many traces of this mysterious past.
