Udine : Michelin's recommendations
This charming walled town was the seat of the Patriarch of Aquileia from 1238 to 1420, then came under Venetian rule. Today, its houses nestle round a hill with a castle on the summit which is encircled by a picturesque alleyway, Vicolo Sottomonte. Although Udine was badly damaged by the 1976 earthquake, its Gothic and Renaissance buildings, narrow arcaded streets and secluded squares give it timeless charm.
