The Sacro Monte dominates the town of Varallo, 20km from Lake Orta. Its 43 chapels are decorated with frescoes and life-size terracotta figures (16C-18C) depicting the Fall of Man and the Life of Christ. They were the work of several artists including Gaudenzio Ferrari (1480-1546), a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci.
