Vercelli lies in the heart of the misty Piedmont paddy fields, between farms built by monastic orders and elegant castles. The city enjoyed a period of great prosperity in the 13C, as its chiefly medieval urban plan still shows. Not to be missed are the superb Sant’Andrea basilica, built in the 13C, and San Cristoforo church, which contains a magnificent 16C fresco cycle. Also of interest is the Museo Borgogna for its Italian and Scandinavian art dating from the 15C to 19C.
