This splendid amphitheatre is one of the finest in the Roman world and can accommodate 25 000 spectators on its 44 tiers of seating. Its structure of pink marble blocks, flint and brick dates from the late 1C AD. Every summer, major opera performances take place here. From the top tier there is a fine view of the city, the hills beyond and, on a fine day, as far as the Alps.
