Piazza dei Signori : Michelin's recommendations
This is a theatrical square and is strangely not as busy in comparison with its neighbour, the Piazza delle Erbe (and it is only mentioned in memory of Juliet's house!). Surmounted by an arch, the Via della Costa provides a way through ... and suddenly you are transported here into another century! To the right stands the Palazzo della Ragione, from the 12 C, dominated by the Lamberti tower, this is now the town hall of Verona. It is linked by an arch to the Palazzo dei Tribunali (formerly known as the Capitano), flanked by a massive brick tower, the "torrione" Scaliger. On your left is the Loggia del Consiglio which is an elegant Renaissance building of very Venetian allure, a memory of the time when Verona fell under the aegis of the Most Serene Republic. And then opposite you, the Prefecture is in an attractive palace from the end of the 13C. In the centre, Dante has looked out over the place with sadness since 1695. Did he not have to take refuge here in Verona between 1301 and 1304, when he was forced to leave Florence? Silence reigns over this place where time seems to have stood still...
