Caprera Beach (Sardinia)

Caprera Beach (Sardinia)

2010-09-02

With its tortured granite rocks, coves of fine sand and crystal clear waters, the little island of Caprera is one of the preserved gems of the Maddalena archipelago

Situated to the north-east of la Gallura in Sardinia, some 12km from Corsica, the Maddalena archipelago is made up of seven islands and as many islets, transformed into a nature park in order to preserve the exceptional flora of the area. Only the main island of Maddalena is inhabited.

Connected to the island of la Maddalena by a 3 mile causeway, the isle of Caprera, like many of the surrounding islets, is truly a paradise. There’s an abundance of erosion sculpted granite escarpments with sheer drops into the sea and the isle is carved out with coves of fine white sand that are sometimes shaded by pine trees. Purified by the strong currents that lash the coast, the waters here are renowned for their extraordinary crystalline green clarity.

Although the isle is a place of leisure, Caprera is also an important site in Italian history and is famous for being the last place of residence and final resting place of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the patriot of Niçois origin who fought for Italian independence.
