Baia was in Roman times a fashionable beach resort with a thermal spa which boasted the most up-to-date hydrotherapy equipment available in the whole empire. The emperors and patricians had immense villas here, now engulfed below sea-level following a drop in ground level. However, the ruins of the famous baths remain. On the hilltop, from left to right, overlooking the sea, these include the baths of Venus, Sosandra and Mercury, all of which bear witness to their prestigious past.
