Wilder than its neighbours, Lakes Maggiore and Como, Lugano enjoys a mild climate and steep mountain countryside. The colourful, appealing village of Campione d'Italia is an Italian enclave in Switzerland. It has a chapel which dates from 1326. Continue on towards Lanzo d'Intelvi (907m). 6km from the resort is the belvedere dei Sighignola, also known as the "balcony of Italy", because of its sweeping view. To the south of lake, Varese is surrounded by peaks with commanding views such as Sacro Monte and Campo dei Fiori.
