Abashiri : Michelin's recommendations

The name of Abashiri calls to mind first and foremost its prison, an institution where inmates were kept in atrocious conditions compounded by the searing cold of this area on the Sea of Okhotsk. After visiting the Prison Museum, don't miss the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum and the Museum of Northern Peoples for an altogether different ambience: they respectively provide an insight into the drift ice shelf – which forms here in winter – and the Ainu, one of the northern peoples. Abashiri is located on the edge of Shiretoko National Park, which is open to visitors all year round.
