Ginkaku-ji
: Michelin's recommendations
Ginkaku-ji, or "Silver Pavilion", was built upon the wishes of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1435-1490), whose grandfather constructed the Golden Pavilion. The Onin War interrupted work and the temple was never clad in precious metal. The Japanese consider it to exalt the artistic value of unfinished works, which illustrate the Buddhist concept of impermanence. Cited as an example of aesthetic purity, it has moss and sand gardens which are also symbolic of Zen "East Mountain" teaching.
