The shogun and aristocracy used to come here to admire the moonlight in meditative silence. Noisy crowds of holidaymakers have since taken over, endlessly filing past the Kinkaku-ji, or Golden Pavilion (14C). The building is reflected in the shimmering waters of the lake. Six layers of pure gold leaf cover the top two floors, whose different architectural designs bring together two styles: the first is inspired by samurai residences, the second by Zen temples. Have a walk along the winding paths of the large and peaceful park.
