Kiyomizu-dera Highly Recommended Highly Recommended Highly Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Dedicated to merciful Kannon, Kiyomizu-dera dates back to the 8C, although the current buildings date from the 17C. The main building has a vertiginously high terrace with panoramic views. In the olden days believers would throw themselves off it onto a patch of vegetation that was supposed to break their fall. Those who survived the feat (85% of people, according to statistics) would have all their wishes granted. Today the ritual is forbidden but you could try out a similar exploit at the marvellous waterfall, without risk of broken bones.
