This imperial residence built in the 16C on the site of the Shugaku temple is made up of numerous villas and teahouses. A paved walkway lined with pine trees separates the upper and lower villas. The upper villa is the more interesting of the two. It faces the Higashiyama Mountain range, and boasts enchanting gardens, lacking in artifice and perfectly integrated with their natural surroundings. A superb teahouse rises up over the pond, which is dotted with little islands.
