Bibendum
After crossing the Daya River on the back of intertwined snakes, Shodo Shonin fainted upon seeing the remarkable natural beauty of this spot. He founded Rinno-ji shrine here in order to house Kannon. All this happened 12 centuries ago. The temple has since been extended and altered and is still thriving; it houses superb statues including Amida-nyorai, the Buddha of Light, Senju Kannon, a deity with a thousand arms, and Bato Kannon, a goddess who feasts on human anger and melancholy. Be sure to visit the Treasury, filled with precious Buddhist artefacts, and the divine Shoyo-en Garden.
