The Imperial Villa of Tamozawa, the imperial family's summer residence, was built around the first residence of the Tokugawa Kishu clan, which was imported from Edo in 1872. In a feat of technical prowess, its 106 rooms connected to each other by corridors (forming 13 interior gardens) are situated on a single floor, without a single stair. Originally created for Prince Yoshihito (the future Emperor Taisho), the villa was used by three different emperors up until 1947. The splendid garden, which surrounds the building on all sides, is also open to visitors.
