As you scan the Osaka skyline, the upturned roofs of Osaka Castle stand out against the backdrop of buildings. Yet everything about this attractive building is new. Nothing remains of the original castle as built by the Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, except for its enormous foundations and the Otemon main gate. The rest was destroyed then rebuilt countless times. The current keep dates from 1930 and was retouched in 1997. Inside there is a weapons museum (sabres) and documents recording the life of the Shogun. From the top you can take in a broad view over Osaka.
