Sakata
: Michelin's recommendations
Sakata is a dynamic city in the province of Yamagata. It has a prosperous merchant past, in particular thanks to the Homma family, who were, and still are, very powerful. Remarkably, the family even shared its Homma Mansion, built in the 18C, with samurais, even though the social standing of the latter was far superior to the merchant elite. The same family also commissioned the Homma Art Museum, which is set in sumptuous grounds, Kakubu-en. It was inaugurated in 1947 and pays homage to the wealthy Sakai family from Shonai.
