This impressive history museum was opened in 1961 thanks to a donation of some 10 000 objects from the heirs of Sendai's founder, Date Masamune. Among the unique exhibits is Date Masamune's famous armour, including the helmet that is thought to have served as a model for the costume of Darth Vador in Star Wars. Other pieces of major historical importance are those relating to Hasekura Tsunenaga's (1571-1622) journeys to Christian lands.
