Sanmachi is the best-preserved area of Takayama, where you can see its architectural heritage, built by the talented craftsmen who worked not only here but in many of Kyoto's temples. The streets that run alongside the Miya River are lined with handsome wooden houses (19C-20C). Formerly the homes of prosperous merchants, many have now been transformed into museums and craft shops. Don't miss Kusakabe Heritage House and Yoshijima Heritage House, fine examples of traditional architecture.
