Now rid of its brothels and kabuki actors dressed as women, Asakusa has redeemed itself since the devastation of the Second World War. It has become a commercial district that is popular with tourists and whose main street, Nakamise-dori, is lined with shops filled with souvenirs and delicacies. There are no tall buildings here, just old-fashioned low-lying houses, and the Thunder Gate with its traditional red lantern welcomes you in. A few feet away is the Senso-ji Temple, a Buddhist shrine and Tokyo's oldest temple.
