Built in the 17C in Baroque style, São Paulo Cathedral was for a long time the largest Roman Catholic church in Asia, and played an active part in converting local inhabitants to Christianity. A fire destroyed much of the church in 1835, leaving only the façade, a moving skeleton with empty bays open to the sky. These ruins are one of the emblems of Macau. The elegant lines of the building and its graceful statues make this cathedral well worth a visit.
