Situated at the end of the Pearl River delta – a river that has seen commercial traffic for the past 15 centuries – Guangzhou (Canton) was first a Portuguese then a British trading post and is now a large cosmopolitan port and an important trading centre. The charms of this sprawling, over-populated and polluted city are not obviously apparent. The most attractive part of the city is Shamian Island, the former European concession – it’s worth heading here to soak up the district’s relatively peaceful atmosphere and sample some of its world-famous Cantonese cuisine.
