A former sandbar that has been stabilised, Shamian Island lies on the zhu jiang (Pearl River). French and British traders (the “foreign devils”) built their homes here in the late 19C, as well as their banks and shops, leaving a wealth of Victorian and Second Empire-style buildings. Restored to their former glory, these have been converted into bars, restaurants and luxury hotels. This tree shaded island has a pleasant atmosphere and is relatively free of traffic.
