Dedicated to Sun Yat-Sen (the first president of the Republic of China, who was from Guangzhou), the 20C Memorial building is now used as a concert hall. The choice of materials symbolises the links between China and the West, with the use of blue clay from Foshan for the tiles, Italian marble and French mosaics. The bells on the roof are intended to spread the revolutionary message, while the calligraphy hanging on the roof spells out Sun Yat-Sen’s motto: “Everything below the sky belongs to everyone”. Inside the building, the Chinese-style building is crowned with a 47m-high dome.
