Built in the 10C, this medieval pagoda has a long history. Standing opposite the estuary of the River Qiantang, it acts as a lighthouse, guiding boats along the river, as well as an observation post providing warning of the tidal bore which comes up the river during high tides with often devastating effects. Modified in the 12C, and attractively weathered by the passing centuries, the pagoda has six storeys lined with galleries, from where you can observe the constant coming and going of boats on the River Qiantang.
