Established by artificial means in the 8C on a branch of the River Qiantang, the West Lake became an immediate success, where palaces, pagodas, temples, kiosks, paths and gardens on its banks and islands have created an enchanting picture-postcard sight which is best appreciated from the top of the Solitary Hill, the former residence of the emperors in the 17C and 18C. Renowned for its gentle climate and excellent teas, the lake remains very dear to the Chinese.
