The mere mention of the Bund has inspired generations of adventurers. It was here, at the beginning of the 20C, that immigrants trying to make a new life for themselves – and hopefully their fortune – disembarked in Shanghai, at the time an international concession and a port city which inspired the wildest dreams. The Bund (quay) has since been transformed into a paved esplanade, lined by trendy boutiques, but it is still as popular and lively as ever. The heritage of yesterday is still visible in its large 1930s neo-Classical buildings, as well as more incongruous constructions inspired by Antiquity, in which stock market transactions were already taking place.
