The “city of canals and gardens” has stood the test of time in the narrow streets of the old centre, in particular in Pingjiang Street, where a stroll along the canal will bring back some nostalgic memories. A section of the canal network built in the 12C has survived the ravages of time, despite the backfilling that has taken place here, and 70 of the 100 gardens that once existed here still survive, many of which are creative works of art featuring rocks and floral designs. Several embroidery workshops and bridges home to improvised markets add to the impression of a district where time has stood still.
