To the south of Anhui province lies the arid range of the Yellow Mountains. A maelstrom of canyons, precipices and bare peaks, these mountains are often shrouded with mist and clouds, creating a picturesque sight which has inspired many poets and painters. Today the region attracts hikers in search of challenging or life-changing climbs. At the foot of the peaks, divided into four “seas of clouds”, picturesque farming villages cultivate tea. Some of these villages are home to magnificent houses built by the wealthy merchants of the area.
