To the north, the Fort neighbourhood is the oldest district of Saint Pierre, built, as its name suggests, around the fort erected in the 17C. Its cobbled lanes are delightful, and here, as in other parts of the town, you will see traces of the eruption of 1902, beginning with the Fort's church. In the colonial hospital, which was less affected, a few pieces of furniture frozen in time can still be seen. The 18C bridge that spans the Roxelane was one of the few monuments to survive the catastrophe.
