If any single district exemplifies the Martiniquais determination to fight back after the devastation caused in 1902, it is that of Le Mouillage. Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral was renovated just 20 years after the eruption, and an exact replica of the Bourse de commerce, transformed into a Heritage House, was built on Place Bertin. This square, the shopping heart of the district, is also the scene of a market. A stroll along the seashore promenade and in the narrow lanes that crisscross the district is quite delightful.
