This volcanic lake is above all a symbol - where Shiva is believed to have poured water from the Ganges. Every year in February or March a gigantic pilgrimage is held here, the Maha Shivaratree, attracting hundreds of thousands of the faithful who come to bathe in the purifying waters of Grand Bassin and honour the god. But whenever you choose to visit, you can’t miss seeing what an important site this is for Hinduism, the religion practised by half of all Mauritians.
